In Tretayuga, Maa Baglamukhi was also worshiped as the Ishta Devi of Ravana. During the Lanka conquest, when Lord Shri Ram came to know about this, he also worshiped Maa Baglamukhi.
It is believed that Baglamukhi Mata was born after worshiping Maa Bhagwati by Lord Brahma. Actually, it happened that a demon named Shankhasur got a boon from Brahma ji so that no man or god could kill him underwater. After this, one day when Brahma ji was absorbed in penance, Shankhasur stole the four Vedas of Brahma ji and hid inside the water. According to the boon, it was impossible to kill Shankhasur underwater by any human or deity. Disturbed by this, Brahma ji started chanting Maa Bhagwati, after which Maa Baglamukhi was born.
Then Mother took the form of a heron bird and killed Shankhasur and handed back all her Vedas to Brahma ji. This form of mother is known as Baglamukhi due to her taking the form of heron. Baglamukhi Maa is also called Pitambari Devi. This is because the mother had appeared from turmeric colored water, and because of this yellow color she is called Pitambari Devi. Yellow color is very dear to Baglamukhi mother, so only yellow colored material is used in her worship and worship.
