1. Chandratal, Lahaul & Spiti District

Chandratal is an attractive lake in Himachal Pradesh, located at an altitude of 4250 meters above sea level under the Lahaul-Spiti district. The shape of this lake is like a half moon, hence it was named Chandratal i.e. the lake of the moon. It is a clear water lake, whose water shines like a crystal and is completely pollution free. It is believed that this area of the lake was once an important site of Tibet and Ladakhi traders going to Spiti and Kullu. But now this lake attracts the whole world towards it. There is a movement of adventure enthusiasts throughout the year. There is also a mythological legend associated with this lake, which is believed to be the place where Lord Indra's chariot lifted Yudhishthira, Yudhishthira being the eldest of the five Pandavas.

Nako Lake is a very popular and beautiful lake located in the Kinnaur district of Himachal Pradesh. This famous Nako lake of Himachal is situated at an altitude of about 3,660 meters above sea level in the cold desert region district Kinnaur. This lake attracts foreign tourists and Buddhist monks. Renuka Lake is situated at an altitude of 672 meters above sea level in the Sirmaur district of Himachal Pradesh. It is the largest natural lake in the region in Himachal Pradesh and covers a circumference of about 3214 metres. Let us tell you that this lake is in the shape of a woman, hence it is considered an ideal of Goddess Renuka. Renuka Lake is located at a distance of 38 km from Nahan. This Lake is named after the name of Lord Parashuramas mother. Renuka Lake is the perfect place to visit for those who love nature and are looking for some secluded place. Unlike other lakes in the region, Renuka Lake is famous for its pristine beauty and surroundings.Apart from its cultural and religious importance, the lake also offers breathtaking views to the tourists who reach the ridge of the lake after passing through dense alpine forests.

4. Kareri Lake

Kareri Lake is a shallow and fresh water lake located in the Dhauladhar range, about 9 km northwest of Dharamsala in the Kangra district of Himachal Pradesh, with a surface of 2934 m above sea level. Apart from being a major sightseeing spot, Kareri Lake is also a very popular trekking spot in the Dhauladhar Range. The water in this lake is obtained from melting snow and this lake Kaif is shallow and the visibility of the water in it is very high. Most of the backpackers traveling to Himachal Pradesh come for the Triund or Indrahar Pass circuit trekking. It is a short trek to Karari Lake which gives a luxurious and serene experience.

5. Lama Lake

Lam Dal is the biggest Lake in Dhauladhar Range and the second largest in Himachal with the circumference of 2.5 kms is considered to be sacred in Himachal and considered as an home of Shiva and Shakti. Lama Lake is situated at an altitude of 3962 meters. The water in this lake is obtained from melting snow. It is is considered as holly lake in the valley. Hundreds of devotee arrive every year to take a holy dip in the Lake during Pilgrimage. These Pilgrimage starts in in the month of august with the festival of shri Krishan Janmashtami and ends on the day of Radha Ashtami. A small Temple of Lord Shiva is also situated here.It can be reached only by trekking via Inderhar Pass, Gaj Pass and Minkiani Pass.

6. Prashar LakePrashar Lake

Parashar is situated at an altitude of 2730 meters in Mandi district of himachal Pradesh. Parashar Lake is known for its panoramic view of the dense forests and snow clad mountains of Dhauladhar. It is called as lake of floating island and it’s clear waters adding the charm of this beautiful place. An ancient pagoda style temple dedicated to Rishi Parashara. The temple is said to have been built in the 13-14th century. It is also said that the entire temple was built using a single deodar tree and it took 12 years to complete the construction of this temple. Walking around the lake gives a mystical sense of calmness to the surroundings. The journey to Parashar is a perfect blend of spiritual journey and exploring in the serene and beautiful Himalayan Mountains. Several camping sites are also located here and it is the base for many easy and difficult treks.

7. Dhankar Lake

There are many popular and famous tourist places in Himachal Pradesh, one of which is Dhankar Lake, which is a very beautiful natural lake situated at an altitude of 4,140 meters above sea level in Lahaul Spiti district of Himachal Pradesh.The famous Dhankar Lake is a high altitude lake in the Spiti Valley. This popular lake is located above Dhankar Math in the Lahaul-Spiti district, and can be approached by a trek from Dhankar village. Tourists will have to trek for about 5 km, if they want to see the breathtaking view of the lake, the clear pale green water of this lake is a welcome sight. If the tourists are looking for a secluded and quiet environment, then this is a very perfect place for them.

 

8. Manimahesh Lake

Manimahesh Lake is a very beautiful and attractive mountain lake located in Bharmour region of Chamba district of Himachal Pradesh. This lake is situated at an altitude of about 4080 meters above sea level. This lake is also known as the Jewel of Shiva. This Manimahesh Lake holds the same importance as Mansarovar lake in Hindu faith.Tourists as well as pilgrims have to walk a distance of 13 kilometers on the mountains to reach this lake. This Manimahesh Lake is a pilgrimage site for Hindus. Whose yatra is organized once a year from August to September on the eighth day of the new moon between Janmashtami to Radhashtami. The journey here is done through the Lambi Narayan temple of Chamba to this lake.

 

9. Suraj Tal Lake

Suraj Tal is a lake situated at an altitude of 4950 meters above sea level which is known as the third largest lake in India. The literal meaning of Suraj Lake situated in the Spiti Valley is 'Lake of the Sun God'. You must go to see this stunning lake just below the Baralacha Pass. This place is like a paradise for nature lovers and photographers.There is a mythological belief about this lake that by taking a dip here one gets freedom from all the sins.The Bhaga River originating from the Baralacha Pass forms the Suraj Tal Lake. This popular lake is the third highest lake in India and the 21st in the world. When the morning rays touch the water of this lake gives mesmerizing charm to the teavelers. The best time to visit Suraj Tal Lake is mid-May to October as the weather is relatively warm. Due to being high altitude lake of Himalayas, the temperature here remains mostly cold.

10. Khajjiar Lake

Khajjiar lake is situated in a plateau region located in the Dhauladhar mountain range of the Himalyas. Despite being situated in the huge mountains of the Himalayas, grassland is found in Khajjiar. Because of these grasslands, Khajjiar is also called Switzerland of India. Situated in the Chamba district of Himachal Pradesh, Khajjiar Lake is a famous tourist destination in India, surrounded by the dense deodar forests. Almost all the travelers visiting Dalhousie definitely write the name of Khajjiar Lake in their bucket list. The distance from Dalhousie to Khajjiar Lake is only 24 kilometers and its altitude is 1900 meters above sea level. Beautiful views of sunrise are seen from near the lake, the sunlight coming through the deodar and pine trees makes you feel a different kind of pleasant sunrise.
